The project aims to underpin 4 mainstreaming processes of the “Carrying Capacity Limit” (CCL) calculation tool and/or methodology into 3 MED coastal regions and 1 IPA (Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance) country with the purpose of improving their level of tourism sustainability through the modification of their public policies and sustainable tourism plans.

After the common work on identifying needs and adapting the existing tools, a qualitative assessment of tourism carrying capacity, sustainable tourism development and climate change challenges of each territory has been done, so that 12 tourism destinations are evaluated (3 per receiver partner), and an individual set of measures per destination are proposed.

A selection of general recommendations based on those individual measures are summarized on this report towards better management of the sustainable development of tourism, of the tourism carrying capacity and climate change resilience for tourism destinations.

Regarding Tourism Carrying Capacity the measures address:

  • Geographical and Time spread of tourism
  • Eco tax
  • Communicating tourism differently

Regarding Resilience to Climate Change the measures address:

  • Monitoring and reporting CO2 emissions
  • Decarbonisation of tourism operations
  • Addressing plastic pollution
  • Better use of land and sea
  • Caring about biodiversity
