The official contact person for the project:

official contact person for the project: Mrs. Haroula Giasirani, Mandated Regional Councillor of South Aegean in European Programmes.

A short description of the entity:

The Region of South Aegean is one of the thirteen regions of Greece. It consists of the Cyclades and Dodecanese island groups in the central and south-eastern Aegean Sea. The region was established in the 1987 administrative reform. With the 2010 Kallikratis plan, its powers and authority were redefined and extended. Along with the North Aegean, it is supervised by the Decentralized Administration of the Aegean based at Piraeus. The capital of the region is situated in Ermoupoli on the island of Syros. Until the Kallikratis reform, the region consisted of the two prefectures of the Cyclades (capital: Ermoupoli) and the Dodecanese (capital: Rhodes). Since 1 January 2011 it is divided into 13 regional units, formed around major islands: Andros, Kea-Kythnos, Syros, Thira (Santorini), Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Tinos, Paros, Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos and Karpathos.

A short description of the role of your entity in the project:

The South Aegean Region is involved in all the work packages, with a more extended participation in the pilot activity of WP3. Its main activity, along with the other partners, is to test previously compiled methods and tools in order to break down any detected barriers and achieve the common objective of finding alternative tactics that allow the sustainable development of tourism in the Region. More specifically, the role of the South Aegean Region pilot consists in promoting ecological alternative tourism in areas of the island of Rhodes.

South Aegean Region, through its participation in ALTER ECO, expects to decongest these famous parts of the island and to promote thematic (enviromental and hiking) tourism in not so well known places of Rhodes that are rich in plantation. An additional objective is the combination
